What Is a Retrofit Smart Home System?
A retrofit smart home system automates a finished home without new wiring. It usually means one of two things:
- Smart touch switches that replace your existing switch plates and connect over Wi-Fi or Zigbee.
- Behind-the-switch modules that fit inside the switch box and make your existing switches "smart".
They are sold online and in shops as do-it-yourself products, controlled from the manufacturer's phone app, and often by voice through Alexa or Google Assistant. In a small flat they do the job well: they are cheap, can be installed in a day, and need no wall chasing. KNX, Crestron and Lutron are a different category — professional-grade systems, designed, installed and programmed by a certified integrator.
Why Retrofit Systems Break Down Above 2 Bedrooms
1. RCC walls, slabs and multiple floors block the signal
Indian homes are built with reinforced concrete slabs and brick or block walls, and larger villas spread across two or three floors and several wings. Wi-Fi and Zigbee signals weaken with every wall and slab they pass through. In a 1–2BHK flat that rarely matters; in a 3BHK+ home, and even more in a villa, it means extra routers, repeaters and hubs just to keep every switch reachable — and switches in the far rooms that respond slowly or drop off entirely.
2. Too many devices for a home network
A 3BHK+ home quickly needs dozens of separate smart devices — well over 50 in a 4–5BHK villa — once every light circuit, fan, curtain and AC is counted, and each one is another device on your Wi-Fi or Zigbee network. Home routers and consumer hubs are not designed to keep that many devices reliably connected, which is why large retrofit installations are the ones that suffer most from "device offline" in the app.
3. Your home depends on the internet and the maker's cloud
Many consumer smart switches route their app and voice control through the manufacturer's cloud servers. When your internet drops — or the manufacturer changes or discontinues its service — schedules and app control can stop working, and how much still works locally varies from product to product. A professional system runs inside your home: the internet is only needed for remote access.
4. Electronics packed into switch boxes, on Indian power
Retrofit modules put the electronics inside the switch box, a small, enclosed and often hot space, on a supply that in many areas sees voltage fluctuations and surges. Many smart switches also need a neutral wire at the switch box, which a lot of existing Indian switchboards do not have. A wired system keeps its switching and dimming electronics in the electrical panel instead, and the wall keypad carries only a low-voltage signal.
5. Separate apps, not one system
Lights end up in one app, AC through an IR blaster in another, curtains in a third, and cameras in a fourth. Scenes like "Good night" or "Leaving home" that should switch off every light, close every curtain and set every AC across a large villa are exactly where a collection of consumer apps struggles, and a single engineered system does not.
6. Brands that come and go, in a home built to last
Most Wi-Fi and Zigbee smart switch brands sold in India are recent arrivals, and many are rebadged generic products. New names appear every year and others quietly disappear, taking their app and firmware support with them — leaving the switches in your walls with nobody to support them. A villa is wired once for twenty years or more.
The professional platforms have a very different record. Lutron has made lighting controls since 1961, when its founder invented the solid-state dimmer, and Crestron has made control systems since 1972. Their systems have been installed in homes, hotels, offices and landmark buildings around the world for decades, and many of those installations have run for well over ten years — proven, robust platforms, which is why they remain the reference names in high-end automation. Lutron: when lighting quality comes first
Lutron invented the solid-state dimmer in 1961 and has made lighting controls ever since. Its dimming is exceptionally smooth on LED fittings, and its Palladiom keypads and motorised shades are designed as architectural finishes.
