What Is Home Automation? A Plain-English Guide for Indian Homes
Home automation is a system that connects a home's lights, curtains, air-conditioning, audio-video, security and door locks to one controller, so they can be run from a keypad, a phone, a voice command or a schedule, and can work together. One button by the bed can switch off every light, close the curtains, set the AC to night mode and arm the cameras. That is the whole idea: fewer switches, less walking round the house, and a home that does the routine things by itself.
This guide explains what can be automated, how a system actually works, the main systems used in India, the difference between a DIY kit and a professional system, and what it costs in Ahmedabad.
What can be automated in a home?
- Lighting: switching, dimming and scenes ("Dinner", "Movie", "All off"), with lights that fade up gently in the morning or turn on with motion in a corridor at night.
- Curtains and blinds: motorised sheer and blackout curtains that open at sunrise or close with the "Movie" scene.
- Climate: AC and VRV control from the same keypads and app, schedules, and switching off when a room is empty.
- Audio and video: music in every room from one source, and a home theatre that starts with a single button.
- Security and access: cameras, video door phones, smart locks and sensors, viewable on the same app.
- Energy: lights and AC that are never left running in an empty room. Our energy savings case study puts lighting savings at 25–35%.
How does home automation work?
Every system, cheap or expensive, has the same four parts:
- Devices that do the work: dimmers and relays behind the lighting circuits, curtain motors, AC interfaces, amplifiers.
- Things you touch: wall keypads, touch screens, the phone app, voice assistants.
- Sensors: motion, light level, temperature, door contacts.
- The logic that ties them together: a processor (or, in KNX, the devices themselves) holding the scenes, schedules and rules.
In a wired system these parts talk over a dedicated control cable laid during construction, which is why it is planned at the conduit stage (see our construction-stage checklist). A wireless system uses radio instead, which is how automation is added to a finished home without breaking walls.
The main home automation systems used in India
| System | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| KNX | An open, international standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3) supported by hundreds of manufacturers. No central box: each device holds its own programming. | Wired homes and buildings, a wide choice of keypads, and a system any certified KNX integrator can service. Also the answer on a tighter budget. |
| Crestron | A single-vendor platform founded in 1972, widely regarded as one of the world's leading names in control and AV. | Large villas where lighting, AV, climate and security must run from one app, and home theatres. |
| Lutron | The lighting-control company founded in 1961, which invented the solid-state dimmer. | Lighting quality and dimming, motorised shades, and RadioRA 3 wireless for finished homes. |
These are not either-or. A common Agrima design runs KNX for the lighting and climate, with Crestron added on top for AV and one app across the villa, or Lutron where lighting quality leads. Our KNX vs Crestron and Crestron vs Lutron comparisons go into the choice.
DIY smart switches vs professional home automation
The cheapest way in is a consumer Wi-Fi or Zigbee retrofit switch, bought online and fitted in place of an ordinary switch. It is a DIY system: owner-installed, controlled through the maker's app and cloud. For a 1–2 bedroom flat that can be enough.
From a 3BHK upwards it stops working well. A large home has a hundred or more devices for Wi-Fi to carry through RCC walls and floors; each product range brings its own app; many of these products are recent, short-lived or rebadged, so spares and support disappear within a few years. For these homes the answer is a professional system, KNX, Crestron or Lutron, including professional wireless (Lutron RadioRA 3, KNX RF) when the home is already finished. Our retrofit guide explains the difference in detail.
| DIY retrofit switches | Professional system | |
|---|---|---|
| Who installs it | The owner | A certified integrator |
| Works without internet | Often not | Yes, runs locally |
| Apps | One per brand | One for the whole home |
| Wall keypads and scenes | Limited | Designed room by room |
| Sensible size | 1–2 bedroom flat | 3BHK, villas, offices |
| Expected life | A few years | 10–15 years and more, with support |
What does home automation cost in Ahmedabad?
From systems Agrima has quoted in Gujarat: lighting control alone for a 2BHK starts around ₹2,20,000; a fully integrated 3BHK villa (lighting, climate, AV, security and access) runs ₹14,50,000 to ₹18,00,000; and a 5BHK villa ₹32,00,000 to ₹45,00,000. The number of rooms, circuits and keypads matters more than the floor area. See the home automation cost page and the room-by-room cost breakdown, or compare fixed packages.
How to get started
- Decide early. In a new home, plan at the conduit stage; in a finished one, ask about wireless.
- List what you want room by room: lights, curtains, AC, music, TV, cameras, locks.
- Get a design, not a guess. A proper proposal names every device per room before it names a price. Our buyer's guide has the checklist, and 10 checks for choosing a company in Ahmedabad covers who to hire.
Frequently asked questions
What is home automation in simple words?
Home automation means the lights, curtains, air-conditioning, music, TV, cameras and door locks in a home are connected to one control system, so they can be run from a keypad, a phone or a schedule, and can act together, for example one button that turns off every light and closes the curtains at night.
Which home automation system is best for an Indian home?
For a 3BHK or larger home, choose a professional platform. KNX is an open standard supported by hundreds of manufacturers and is the most common choice for wired homes. Crestron is the choice when audio-video and one app across a large villa matter. Lutron is the choice when lighting quality matters most. Many projects combine them. Consumer Wi-Fi switches bought online suit a 1–2 bedroom flat.
Can home automation be added to an existing home without rewiring?
Yes. Professional wireless systems such as Lutron RadioRA 3 and KNX RF are made for finished homes and replace existing switches without breaking walls. The cheaper consumer Wi-Fi switches also need no rewiring, but they are a DIY product best kept to small flats.
How much does home automation cost in Ahmedabad?
Lighting control alone for a 2BHK starts around ₹2,20,000. A fully integrated 3BHK villa (lighting, climate, AV, security and access) runs ₹14,50,000 to ₹18,00,000, and a 5BHK villa ₹32,00,000 to ₹45,00,000. These are figures from systems Agrima has quoted in Gujarat.
Does home automation work without internet?
A professional system runs locally: keypads, scenes, schedules and sensors keep working when the internet is down. The internet is needed only to control the home from outside it and for voice assistants. Many consumer Wi-Fi products depend on the maker's cloud and stop responding without it.
